The method of loose associations is a psychoanalytic procedure used to study the unconscious mind. It is widely employed in various fields including psychoanalysis, psychology, sociology, psychiatry, social work, and psycholinguistics.
According to Sigmund Freud and his followers, uncontrolled associations reveal symbolic or direct projections of the often unrecognized content of consciousness. This allows for the identification and description of affective complexes through associative experiments.
In 1879, Sir Francis Galton conducted the first associative experiment. He selected 75 words and wrote each one on a separate card. Galton would then look at each card and record his thoughts while viewing them. However, he chose not to publish the results due to their remarkable clarity in exposing the essence of human thought.
Carl Jung used the free association method as a lie detector to establish individual motivation. This technique helps individuals understand what troubles them and begin to address their psychological issues.
The human brain encodes information through visual images, sensory information, and associated bodily feelings and emotions when something needs to be remembered.
This universal method of unconscious research is now available on your mobile device! It can be used for both self-psychoanalysis and patient analysis.
